A cat by any other name: how my cats got their names
Biscuit a rescue cat from the charity Cats Protection: He was already named Biscuit because of his ginger colour. Over time this became shortened to Biccie, his nicknames, Orange for his glorious colour, and Ted, because of his teddy bear like face. Poppy was a black and white cheeky cat - named after a character in a children’s TV programme I had been watching shortly before she came into my life as a homeless little stray. Her nicknames, Poppet, because she was a little Poppet, and Poppy-Zay, I can't remember why, it just seemed to fit her. Shortly after joining our family she gave birth to her only litter of kittens. We kept a semi long-haired female kitty and called her Peugeot. Again it just seemed to fit her. She was also known by her nicknames of Baby-Baby - she was always the baby of the family - and Princess because she had been a spoiled Princess since the day she was born. You can read about the cats that inspired paws on floors here. I was fortunate to have many cats in my life while I was growing up. They include Tiddy Bom Boms; the name suited her personality and that of the person who named her (my mom). Tiddy as she was also known was the cat that began my fascination with more unusual cat names. The naming of cats is a difficult matter, It isn’t just one of your holiday games. At first you may think I’m as mad as a hatter,When I tell you a cat must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES: T.S. Eliot, Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats Tips on naming cats It is said one-syllable names, like Jack and Jill, make learning and recognition easier for your cat. Two-syllable names also work well because animals listen for the first syllable sound. If choosing a long name keep in mind the shortened version it will inevitably be called. © paws-on-floors.co.uk |
