Humphrey: Nicknamed Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office, was a stray, long-haired, black-and-white cat who became one of the most well known and admired cats in Great Britain. He wandered into the prime minister's London residence of No.10 Downing Street in 1989, late in Margaret Thatcher's prime ministership, and remained throughout John Major's term in office. Humphrey, named after the character of "Sir Humphrey Appleby" in "Yes, Minister", disappeared in 1997 shortly after Tony and Cherie Blair moved in. Cherie had to deny reports she banished him from the house because she is allergic to cats. It later emerged he had retired to the suburbs with an official after developing kidney problems. Humphrey passed away March, 2006 at the home of the cabinet office worker who looked after him. Humphrey, was believed to be 18.

Ten years after Humphrey retired Downing street has a new feline resident. Sybil, a black and white puss will be given the run of Number 10 and it's garden. Named after the bossy landlady in Fawlty Towers, Sybil belongs to Alistair Darling and his wife Margaret who brought her down from their constituency home in Scotland after they moved into the flat above Number 10. A spokesman for PM Gordon Brown, who lives next door at Number 11 with his family confirmed Humphrey has a successor.

Mr. Lear loved the cat so much that when he moved to a different home he instructed the architects to design it as an exact replica of his previous one. This was supposedly to make the move to the new place as easy as possible for "Foss".
